Alucushion®
FR (Fire
Retardant Grade)
Insulation materials (Roofing)
Alucushion® FR is a multi-purpose
fire retardant grade insulation material
used in factories, warehouses, shopping centres, schools, offices, residential buildings and
affordable housing. It is an insulation material that offers many features and benefits
not found in 'traditional' insulation products. Developed in Europe and applied
successfully in many countries, Alucushion® FR is a 4 mm compounded foil, consisting of a
low-density polyethylene 'bubble' laminated on both sides with aluminium foil.
Alternatively, Alucushion® FR can be supplied with aluminium foil on one side, and a white
polyethylene coating on the other side to add a decorative dimension.
The thousands of air bubbles created during the manufacture
of Alucushion® FR form a column of immobilised dry air effectively countering heat loss
through convection and conduction. Add to this the highly reflective and
low emissive properties of the aluminium
foil, giving a 95% restriction of heat transmission by radiation, and the effectiveness of
the product as a heat-transfer barrier becomes obvious.

Effect of fire
Alucushion® was historically the first insulation material
that was evaluated in the large-scale testing facility developed for
industry at the CSIR. Being forerunners in the industry, the new
Alucushion® FR (Fire Retardant Grade) was one of the first
insulation materials in South Africa to be tested and approved
according to the new SANS 428 fire regulations as part of SANS 10400
Part T of the National Building Regulations. Alucushion® FR
performed extremely well under these simulated conditions, with and
without sprinkler systems.

Installation
Steel frames - laid apex to eave over purloins and under roof cladding, using
plastic coated straining wires at 383 mm centres.
Timber frames - laid gable to gable under purloins/battens and stapled to top of trusses.
