Derbigum Manufacturing
(Pty) Ltd
Waterproofing membranes
Derbigum Manufacturing is a South African owned
company that manufactures and markets waterproofing systems, and has more than 20 years
experience in new-generation polymer-modified bitumen waterproofing materials. Derbigum is
made under licence to Derbit SPA of Italy, the first company to develop and market atactic
polypropylene-modified bitumen roofing membranes (in 1967). Derbigum is backed by Agrément Boards in Italy, Belgium, England, the USA and South Africa. In
Europe, Derbigum has been used as a dam and canal lining, for bridges and viaducts, and
the product has also been used at the White House in Washington, the Kremlin in Moscow,
the Pantheon in Rome, and the Castle in Cape Town. More than 600 000 000 m² have been
laid worldwide. Derbigum is a leading supplier to the S.A. market of waterproofing
membranes.
Authority
Agrément Board certificate 92/219 (reappraised 1997).
Composition and manufacture
Polymer-modified bitumen with double reinforcing of glass tissue and polyester cloth. The
glass provides dimensional stability and a barrier to ultraviolet and other radiation. The
polyester cloth, which is spun-bonded, provides strength and flexibility and will not
shrink.
Sitework
Derbigum SP 4 mm sheeting is used for flat concrete and boarded roofs.
For roof gardens, balconies to receive tiled finishes and
parking decks we would recommend the use of a Derbigum 3 mm plus 4 mm double layer system.
Effect of heat
Derbigum is stable at temperatures of up to 120ºC.
Other properties
Resistance to ultraviolet and infrared radiation is very high.
Application
Derbigum is torched on. All overlaps and wherever the material is to be sealed onto
substrates must be subjected to a naked flame, which melts the adhesive underside of the
sheeting, immediately after which the bond is made and the sheeting firmly pressed down to
create lap adhesion and fixing to substrates.
Service
Installed by an approved contractor Derbigum has a 10-year insurance backed guarantee.
